The Dynamic Retirement Plan for Pessimists and High Achievers
Clearly, retirement can be a challenging life transition, either financially or personally. Many people have lots of time on their hands, but way too little money. Others have lots of money, but don’t know what to do with their time.
In this regard, Samuel Johnson declared, “Money and time are the heaviest burdens of life and the unhappiest of all mortals are those who have more of either than they know how to use.”
Recently I received a phone call from Bob M. in Salmon Arm, B.C. After taking early retirement, Bob had purchased a number of copies my book How to Retire, Happy, Wild, and Free for himself and his friends. He told me that he agreed with 95 percent of what I said in the book.
There was a major problem in Bob’s retirement life, however. Even though he didn’t want to miss out on some of the good things in retirement life like his father did (his father died before he could enjoy these things), Bob missed the challenge and the rewards that his career and worklife had provided.
As Bob’s case indicates, a traditional retirement of no work and all play is not appropriate for a large number of retirees. Traditional retirement represents limited choices, such as occasional travel, shopping, spending more time with grandchildren, playing bingo, visiting friends, and watching lots of TV. Many people miss the busyness and intellectual challenge of work. Even when they turn to volunteer work, something is missing. They need a much greater challenge.
For high achievers and pessimists alike, the best way to retire may be not to retire at all. Indeed, some experts suggest that it’s best for workaholics to continue working long and hard hours well into their 70s or 80s instead of finding an alternative, such as retirement or semi-retirement.
Perhaps you remember an article that appeared in Fortune magazine around mid-1996. It was called, “How I Flunked Retirement; An Interview with Lee Iacocca.” Despite having millions in the bank along with a fine house in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles, and another one in Italy, Iacocca could not find fulfillment without a higher purpose. His solution to retired life was to “keep working — at something you enjoy.”First Iacocca tried to take over Chrysler with Kirk Kerkorian. Taking over companies with someone else, however, was not something Iacocca considered as fun. Eventually, in 1997, he founded EV Global Motors Company to manufacture and sell electric-powered bicycles.
