Today’s post was inspired, in part, by the picture of a super model who suffers from anorexia. She got that way from trying to maintain a really thin body. Now she is deathly ill and wants to show everyone what her unnatural eating habits have caused.
The following quote is by Anatole France (1844 - 1924). “”The average man, who does not know what to do with his life, wants another one, which will last forever.”"
This quote is an apt description of the large majority of people today. Many of us can’t decide what we want to do with our life, but we want to make sure that it goes on forever. We spend huge amounts of money on plastic surgery, diets and exercise companies trying to make ourselves into what society seems to think is the ideal individual.
Do you want to know what is the sad part about this? Everything is based upon physical appearance. This does not make sense. Physical appearance changes as we age. It is a natural thing. Look at everything else in the world. Whether it is a living thing or an inanimate thing, it ages and its appearance changes. Whether you are talking about a tree, a pet dog, a car or a person, their appearance changes with every passing year. Trying to change that appearance to reflect something that it is not is a fool’s game. You will never win. As well as never winning, you are also endangering your life every time you try to change your appearance from what it is to something that is different. As a youngster, Michael Jackson was a good-looking boy. For some unknown reason he attempted to change his appearance. What you see today is some weird caricature that stumbles from one crisis to the next.
If you have been following the news, recently a young woman from Ontario, Canada, went to a clinic to have a cosmetic procedure done. The procedure being performed on her was liposuction. It was done by a general practitioner, a doctor who was not a plastic surgeon. Something went horribly wrong during the procedure and this young woman needlessly died.
I say needlessly because of two things. First and foremost, there was no need for her to have this operation. She did so because she thought she was overweight and she wanted instant results. Secondly, the doctor who performed the procedure may not have had sufficient training.
Daily, millions of people around the world undergo cosmetic surgery or other procedures to make themselves look like they think the “ideal” person should look. Many have temporary success, but some suffer terrible results which leave them disfigured or dead, all for the sake of appearance.
Having dealt with some of the most successful and powerful people in the world, I can tell you that appearance does not make the person. Integrity, personality, charm, charisma and character are far more important in defining a person than appearance ever will be.
Yet, the media and society in general worship appearance. Why do they do this? They do it because it can be bought and it doesn’t take much effort. Integrity, personality, charm, charisma and character on the other hand require a lot of effort to develop. And, in this instant world we live in no one wants to spend time on anything that will require a lot of effort. Everyone wants instant results and they want someone else to do it for them.
I want you to stop and think for a minute about the type of example we are setting for our children. We are teaching them that good looks are more important that anything else. They feel that if they are not pretty or handsome with great bodies that they are failures. This affects their attitudes, their self worth and their outlook on life.
As you know, one of the most important issues facing our children today is their overall health. Excess weight is one health issue that is facing millions of children around the world. Since a positive body image is very important to many girls and young women, many try to overcome this weight problem by starving themselves or taking “pills” offered by unethical hucksters. Almost all of them have bought into the myth that body image is very important. Unfortunately the majority of them end up being hurt either emotionally or physically. The most important thing is not body image, but body health. If a person, particularly a young person is healthy, then that is the most important thing. And, to stay healthy, they have to eat properly and get enough exercise.
Dubious marketers, aided by advertising agencies and the media have been perpetrating several myths for ages. No one needs to look like anyone else. Not everyone will be tall and thin, and it would be a dull world if everyone was.
Here is myth number one. You absolutely have to look like your friends.
The truth is that you do not have to look like your friends. In most circumstances, it is physically impossible for two people to be exactly the same size. Your friend may be able to eat anything and everything and never gain an ounce, but that my friend is genetics. I know it stinks that you can’t eat half what she does without gaining weight, but that’s life. It is far more important for you to be healthy than it is to fit in your friend’s plaid skirt or skin-tight jeans. Trying to “get down to her size” will only make you crazy, so be healthy and be happy.
Here is myth number two. Only losers cannot diet their way down to a thin super model body.
The Truth is that super models are thinner than 98 percent of the female population. Look, everyone has certain genes, which will determine their body type. It was written in stone before you were born. No single body type is better than the others, so you’re stressing out over something you can’t control. Less than 2% of the population has that super model look, which means that there are actually very few people who look like that. Also, if you do some research on models, you will find that many of them live on near starvation diets to maintain those thin physiques. And, many of them, like the one in the picture plastered all over Italy, pay a terrible price for doing so.
Here is myth number three. Boys like only incredibly thin girls.
The Truth is that while young guys like to gawk at thin or very pretty girls, it is another matter altogether when it comes to dating. Most teenage guys and young men are petrified of “very pretty” girls, and feel more than a little awkward around them. In fact, they feel far more comfortable with regular girls.
Here is myth number four. How a person looks is the only thing that matters, not how smart, engaging or pleasant they are to be around.
The Truth is that this is what is known as faulty logic. The most important thing is that you are healthy and pleasant to be with. If you are buying into the appearance myth, then you are punishing yourself for absolutely no reason. Think about this for a moment. If you are trying to make your appearance or your body into something that it isn’t, you should understand that this will catch up to you. If you abuse your body, it will only take it for so long, and then it is payback time. Payback may be in the form of disease, disfigurement or even death.
Do not measure your self worth by the standards of someone else. Endeavor to stay healthy and fit by maintaining a proper diet with plenty of exercise. Be healthy, be happy and most of all - be you!
