keyword research
The building blocks of your adsense real estate revolves around the keywords you choose to build your site around. For the complete beginner, certain keywords “Pay” more per click that others. The amount you earn per click depends on how much the adwords advertiser is bidding. In some markets - like insurance and credit repair for example - the bidding is very competitive. This drives up the amount advertisers are willing to bid to get their ads shown. Google will always show the ads that will make you most revenue automatically.
Super Ninja Keyword Strategy:
Before we get into researching keywords, I want to share with you a little strategy I use to analyze my keywords. Remember the last tutorials we talked about how “Forum Motormouths” were asking “Why would I want to send my traffic off my page for pennies when I can sell them stuff for dollars?” Actually, this is a very worthwhile and legit question. Why would you want to accept earning $0.50 per click when you could sell them an affiliate product and earn $40 commission?
Here’s the answer. If you are a member over at AdwordsExcellence you will know I am constantly rambling on and on about “buying keywords” and “non buying keywords.” Buying keywords are keywords that bring traffic who are at the end of their “purchasing life cycle” and who are at the point of buying. Non buying keywords are the general keywords that bring in untargeted traffic who may or may not buy anything.
As an adwords advertiser we want to be bidding on “Buying Keywords” in order to sell more affiliate products - or our own products for that matter. Makes sense, right? Well, when we build adsense sites, promoting affiliate products is not high on the agenda. So the keywords we use don’t need to be “buying keywords.” We want to concentrate on finding keywords that pay the most but are also not overused by the masses so we have a slight chance of ranking highly in the search engines!
“Why would I want to send my traffic away for pennies, when I can sell em stuff for dollars?” Answer - you don’t! You determine what keywords are “buying” and what keywords are “non buying.” Then you simply build your adsense sites around the “non buying” keywords and your affiliate sites around the “buying” keywords. That way, the traffic you get to your adsense sites is highly unlikely to buy anything and are more in “browsing” mode… thus more likely to click around your page… and hopefully on your adsense ads! Likewise, the traffic you get to your affiliate sites will be in “buying” mode and more likely to buy your recommended product and earn you commission
Researching Keywords For Our Adsense Sites:
In order to find and research keywords, you will need to own a keyword research tool. Using free tools such as Overture or Wordtracker is not effective for adsense publishers since they only show you how many searches each keyword gets and not the price advertisers are bidding for them. You will need to invest in a keyword research tool to find your keywords. I use Keyword Elite and Adwords Analyzer for my research… I like them both equally!
=> Researching keywords for adsense sites should be taken seriously and be done differently from other keyword research. You have two main targets when researching adsense keywords:
1. The keyword is being searched for with frequency BUT is not being used by millions of other people. If millions of other people are building sites around certain keywords then it is going to be much harder to rank in the search engines and get a decent amount of traffic. I usually ignore keywords with more than 500,000 competing sites and go after those with less than 500,000 competing sites.
2. Adwords advertisers are bidding highly on those keywords. “High” is whatever you deem it to be. Over $1 a click, to me, is high enough to target that keyword. What you want to do is totally up to you
Here is an example:
Remember back to the last tutorial where we “dug down” and found keywords related to “deep sea fishing.” We never paid much attention to these keywords then, just accepted the fact that we had found a niche around the topic of “fishing.” Now we need to draw up a list of keywords we are going to use to write content for and essentially build our sites around. Let’s look at the three fundamental aspects we should be looking at before deciding whether or not to target a keyword: Number Of Searches V’s Number Of Results and Cost Per Click:

From the above screenshot, we can clearly see the results of number of searches, number of competing sites (results) and the cost adwords advertisers are paying. You can also see two keywords where I have underlined the data to show why they would be good keywords to target. High number of searches coupled with a beatable number of competing pages… along with a decent Cost Per Click figure. When you open your own keyword research tool and “dig down” on a narrow topic, you will also be faced with the above data. You will then simply want to pick out the keywords where the above three factors are favorable to you and write your content/build your sites around those… disregarding all the rest!
Conclusion:
There is no “secret formula” for finding high paying, low competition keywords with adsense. You simply have to open your keyword research tool and get researching! Look for keywords with a decent search volume coupled with a comfortable number of competing pages. And be sure to keep an eye on the Cost per Click for an indication of what you can expect to earn when someone clicks your ads.
