The Disadvantages of Being a Traveling Nurse

Although traveling all over the country sounds fun and may even be what most people want to do in the course of performing their profession, working as a traveling nurse has its disadvantages too.

No particular work has all advantages or disadvantages each one has its own set of one and the other which each individual has to balance. Working from one state to another or one hospital to another after having learned the corporate culture of your present assignment and going through the learning process all over again is one of the disadvantages of being a traveling nurse. If you are typically a reserved person, you have to change your attitude to succeed as a traveling nurse since your will be working in different places in the course of a single year. A traveling nurse therefore needs to be able to adapt quickly, learn the ropes faster at the new place of assignment and be flexible enough to interact with different people in different places every two or three months. If you are the timid type of person, then the situation may become problematic!

If you can not adjust quickly to your surroundings and work environment, then working as a traveling nurse may not be as enjoyable for you as it is to some persons.

One of the unspoken prerequisites of becoming a traveling nurse is a fast reaction time to any type of situation – be it with regards to your patient, fellow medical staff, and even the person on the street. Why? Since you are constantly on the move, being able to react almost instantaneously (and independently) gives you an advantage over others.

Remember, being a traveling nurse obviously involves a lot of travel. If you are married, this may pose a problem since you will have no time (or very little time in between assignments) for your family, husband and children. You have to carefully consider this when thinking of working as a traveling nurse. Even if you are single and you like to be close to your family but would still love to travel, keep in mind that there are times when you have to be away for more than six to eight weeks on stretches. Your choice of assignment then should be limited to areas that are easily accessible by within a day’s travel by car or plane so you can visit your family on weekends.

One of the biggest drawbacks of working as a traveling nurse is if you get assigned to a cruise ship. You may think it is fun and exciting, working while on a cruise but since there is no other place to go except on the ship, you have to be aware that you are automatically on call 24/7!

Another equally wearisome disadvantage is the enviousness of some fellow nurses who are working for the medical facilities / hospitals that you are assigned to. You have to deal with the animosity (of only a few not all anyway) since when they discover that you are a traveling nurse, they know you get paid more than they do. The only way around this kind of situation is to maintain a friendly, outgoing and pleasant nature wherever you go to work.

Lifesaving Training

Many people have invested on different trainings and courses that enhances skills and knowledge for the betterment of jobs, or for the development of oneself. Somehow, having this programs, courses will earn a person knowledge and additional skills that will make work much easier or perhaps earn him a promotion or a great position in the company.
But there are courses that I think is very important. May it be for work or for personal development. I am talking about Basic Life Support. Learning First aid, CPR will surely enhance our confidence in helping someone in an emergency or during accidents. Come to think of it, accidents and emergencies may happen anytime. It could even happen to you. It does not choose a place. In other words whether you are at work or at home, the chances of an accident or an emergency is there.
As the saying goes, ” It is better to know first aid and not need it than need first aid and not know it”. I think everyone would agree with me on this.
So it would be worhtwhile to take a little time and learn the basics of first aid and CPR. You can never tell that the life you save maybe your own or perhaps that of your family.
I have worked in a rescue service as a paramedic firefigther for 13 years. I have responded to a lot of cases from heart attack to vehicular accidents. One thing is sure, victims who are provided first aid at site always have greater chances of survival as compared to those who were not given any pre hospital care.

How to exercise your eyes

For more details on this article please visit http://complete-eyecare.blogspot.com/.
Sit comfortably on a chair. Rub your hands together until they feel warm. Close your eyes and cover them lightly with your cupped palms. Avoid applying pressure on your eyeballs. Place your palms so that the nose remains uncovered, and the eyes remain behind the slight hollow of the palms. Make sure that no light rays enter the eyes, and leave no gaps between fingers or between the edge of the palms and the nose. You may still see other lingering traces of colors. Imagine deep blackness and focus on the blackness. Take deep breaths slowly and evenly, while thinking of some happy incident; or visualize a distant scene. After your eyes see nothing but blackness, remove your palms from your eyes. Repeat the palming for 3 minutes or more.

  1. Close your eyes tightly for 3-5 seconds, then open them for 3-5 seconds. Repeat this 7 or 8 times.
  2. Close your eyes and massage them with circular movements of your fingers for 1-2 minutes. Make sure you press very lightly; otherwise, you could hurt your eyes.
  3. Press three fingers of each hand against your upper eyelids, and hold them there for 1-2 seconds, then release. Repeat 5 times.
  4. Sit and relax.Roll your eyes clockwise, then counter-clockwise. Repeat 5 times, and blink in between each time.
  5. Sit about 6 inches (200 mm) from the window. Make a mark on the glass at your eye level (a small sticker, black or red, would be perfect). Look through this mark and focus on something far away for 10-15 seconds; then focus on the mark again.
  6. Hold a pencil in front of you at arm’s length. Move your arm slowly to your nose, and follow the pencil with your eyes until you can’t keep it in focus. Repeat 10 times.
  7. Look in front of you at the opposite wall and pretend that you are writing with your eyes, without turning your head. It may seem difficult at first, but with a bit of practice it is really fun. The bigger the letters, the better the effect.
  8. Imagine that you are standing in front of a really big clock. Look at the middle of the clock. Then look at any hour mark, without turning your head. Look back at the center. Then look at another hour mark. Do this at least 12 times. You can also do this exercise with your eyes closed.
  9. Focus on a distant object (over 150 feet or 50 m away) for several seconds and slowly refocus your eyes on a nearby object (less than 30 feet or 10 m away) that’s in the same direction. Focus for several seconds and go back to the distant object. Do this 5 times.
  10. Focus on an object in the distance (as far as possible) with a low contrasting background. Do this for a few minutes every half hour or so. This does not improve your vision, nor does any other technique. It can, however, maintain your best eyesight level during the day and prevent significant further vision deterioration.

Tips

  • It’s more important to do the exercises regularly than to do them for a long time. Even 30-60 seconds of eye movement every hour is very helpful. For example, when your computer takes its sweet time to do something, most people just swear at the poor thing and waste the time, but you can make a few circles with your eyes. Even the first day you do this, you should notice that, when you finish working, your eyes aren’t as tired as usual.
  • Taking short breaks from near work (e.g. staring at a computer monitor) to stare out to the distance also relieves some strain.
  • palming is a good method to help your eyes feel better. You close your eyes and put you palms over them, this will rest your eyes as the natural chi power that flows from your hands will rest your eyes.

Warnings

  • Consult your optometrist (eye doctor) before doing any of these exercises. The last thing you want to do is add further strain to your eyes, or damage them permanently.
  • When doing these exercises, make sure that you’re not facing anybody, or that they know you’re doing eye exercises. Otherwise they might think you’ve gone nuts.
  • Extensive peer reviewed research has shown that visual clarity is not improved by exercise. Some people have weakness in the ability to turn their eye in or out. You may have esotropia (eye naturally turned in) or exotropia (eye naturally turned out). Exercise may help these conditions.
  • Doing these exercises when you wear contacts may cause them to suction to your eyeball. They might also move around and possibly become folded and/or dislodged, which can be extremely uncomfortable as well.
  • Do not apply pressure on your eyes.

Just a Dab and you will Smell Great

The sense of smell can trigger strong emotions. It can take you back to a different time in your life, such as when you smell cookies baking. Or the smell of your mother’s perfume, can take you back to when you were a kid.

It is absolutely amazing, what memories a fragrance can trigger. That is another reason why aromatherapy is very popular now, and is used a lot for stress relief. The smell of lavender can relax you, and the smell of wild flowers can invigorate you.

The same can be said for any fragrance you wear. Don’t overdue a perfume or it will just annoy people. There is nothing worse than an elevator full of people and one person wearing a entire bottle of perfume.

Fragrances complete an outfit, and if you just put a dab on, can make people around you feel relaxed and calm, and will remember you. Choose carefully, when purchasing fragrances, and when you find one you like, stick to that brand. This will be your accessory, and you will leave a little something on the air when you leave a room.

If you want to be remembered for your fragrance, make sure you dab it on the right heat places on your body. The best spots are behind your ears, at the base of your throat, your wrists, and even behind your knees, but just a tiny dab will go a long way. Remember, you will adjust to the fragrance, but it could overwhelm people around you and you will be remembered for all the wrong reasons!. A little dab goes a long way.

An introduction to Adult Stem Cells

Adult Stem CellI’m sure you’ve already heard about Stem Cells. Maybe you saw a news story or a read a news article or saw the Presidential address. They are the most widely publicized scientific discovery today and with good reason. How about Embryonic Stem Cells? They have created a great deal of controversy and with good reason. The lure of what Embryonic Stem Cells can do for our health has led to ethical issues surrounding such things as embryo harvesting. One thing remains, Stem Cells represent the future of Health and Wellness as we know it. And they are here to stay.

So what are they?

Stem Cells are master cells, meaning that they can generate many, if not all, of the different tissues of the body. They are with us our entire lives and are released naturally from the bone marrow, but like everything else, the process behind their release slows down with age. When there aren’t as many stem cells in the blood stream, the body can’t repair and renew itself as it once did. These master cells are still contained in the bone marrow in the millions, just not being released as they should.

As this natural release occurs we need to concern ourselves with finding ways to reverse it. The good news is there are 4 things we can do.

Exercise - as we already know, regular exercise is vital to good health
Proper breathing - deep breathing oxygenates the blood and tissues
Good Nutrition - we need nutrients to nourish and water to flush toxins from our cells
Stem cell enhancers - a new product category set to become what antioxidants are today

Stem Cells are the only known source for rebuilding the body and renewing health by restoring lost or degraded cells. They have already been used to help treat things such as Leukemia, AIDS, Alzheimer’s Disease and multiple sclerosis.

They have been used to form new cartilage, grow new corneas to restore sight to the blind, as treatments for stroke victims, and several groups are using adult stem cells with patients to repair damage after heart attacks.

Early clinical trials have also shown initial success in patient treatments for Parkinson’s disease and spinal cord injury. And, the first FDA-approved trial to treat juvenile diabetes in human patients is ready to begin at Harvard Medical School, using adult stem cells.

In short, they are the building blocks of life itself.

Adult versus Embryonic Stem Cells.

Adult Stem Cells is the term given to stem cells after birth which means babies have adult stem cells in their bodies. Embryonic stem cells are simply those from embryos — undifferentiated, or not developed into a specific cell types. Research has shown that embryonic stem cells can develop genetic abnormalities. This is not the case with our own adult stem cells.

For this reason, researchers such as Kursad Turksen in his book ‘Adult Stem Cells’ offer the following wisdom: “Adult stem cell biology is at the forefront of the emerging field of regenerative medicine, offering a source of cells to generate tissues that lack some of the ethical and political impediments inherent in embryonic, fetal, and cloned cells.”

The biggest advantage of using adult stem cells is that the body’s own stem cells can be used, effectively removing the problems of immune rejection or abnormalities.

Adult stem cell science is real.

Adult stem cell research offers the best and clinically proven treatments for a whole host of human diseases and conditions and is helping people overcome these health challenges as you read this article. There are currently over 700 FDA approved clinical trials going on in the United States using adult stem cells but none for embryonic stem cells which is why the future of regenerative health and wellness looks great with Adult stem cells.

Matt Canham runs http://adult-stem-cells.info, a site dedicated to informing people about how increasing the number of adult stem cells circulating in the blood stream can help maintain optimal health.

Five Fashion Tips for a Sleeker You

Work with your body for the best fitting clothes..

Here are 5 great tips to get you looking for the right clothes. Remember find styles that suit your body type, don’t squeeze into clothes for the sake of the latest styles. Gravity will take over, and anything you are trying to squeeze into an outfit, will find another place to bulge out.

1) Shop by Shape and keep it simple. Forget fussy, go for sleek simple shapes, they are slimming and will make you feel and look great. You know that feeling when you put on a dress or top or pants, and they just fit right in all the right spots, you feel good.

2) Try long flowing styles such as longer jackets, don’t drown in fabric, remember too big a shape clothing can be just as unflattering on you as too tight clothing. Remember to work WITH your body, or it will be like trying to fit a round peg in a square hole, just not going to happen.

3) Go for fluid fabrics that drape smoothly without clinging too closely. We all know that they tend to cling in all the wrong spots! Soft cottons, matte jerseys, fine knits, are all good fabrics that drape.

4) Try a one color look, from collar to hem, to lengthen and slim your figure. for an even slimmer look, try wearing tights or hosiery in the same color.

5) Stay away from tops and bottoms that are the same length, you will end up looking boxy. Try a tunic length top or jacket over a knee length skirt. or short over long works well too, such as a twin set over a longer skirt or nice fitting jeans, just make sure the top and bottoms are not the same length.

Don’t forget to accessorize, with pretty scarves, or elegant earrings, just stay away from bold accessories that speak louder than your outfit.

No matter what size or shape you are, once you find that perfect outfit, that fits well, you will feel good about yourself. Don’t punish yourself for being a different shape or size, just work with what you have, and stay away from the trends that will just cause frustration.

Shopping online, can be a great way to get ideas for clothes. When shopping locally, you are restricted to the styles, sizes and shapes. The internet has given us a much larger and wider market for finding stylish and nice fitting clothes in all sizes, shapes and colors. There are some great website out there that cater to all shapes and sizes… check them out, go surfing, and have some fun!

Does the Shoe Fit?

Did you know that the earliest known shoes date from 8000 to 7000 BC?.. and were found in Oregon?. It was for protection of the feet.

Now, we can’t even imagine not wearing shoes… they are not only functional, but a fashion statement.. and a girl can not have enough shoes!

There is also shoe etiquette. It is customary to remove your shoes before entering a house, unless you are invited to keep them on, or you bring indoor shoes, such as your party heels etc.

For some societies, indoor footwear is provided for their guests, as it is considered rude to show the soles of your feet to others.

Over the years, many women have given up comfort for style, and have worn heels so high, that back problems have become the norm, and walking properly would be another story. As a young girl, you actually had to “learn” to wear and walk in high heels. If we wanted to look nice, this was about the only choice of shoe unless you wore your grandmother’s orthopedic shoes.

Thankfully, style and comfort have crossed paths, and we now have many choices, depending on our activities. Running shoes, sandals, flat shoes, pumps, work boots and the list goes on. We can now fashion our shoes with our outfits. We are also more aware of spine health, and posture, and will not put up with pinching and bad fitting shoes for the sake of fashion.

Shoes are now big business, and have now been engineered and designed to fit feet properly, and yet with style and comfort. This is especially important to those people on their feet all day, who had to sacrifice style for comfort. But if you take a look in any shoe store now, there are so many choices for your feet. Each brand keeps trying to come up with the next most comfortable and stylish shoe.. there have never been so many choices..

So, make sure and wear the right shoe for your activity, and your back, hips and feet will thank you from the bottom of their “sole”..

What is Prom Night?

If you are the parents, its a nail biting… exciting, yet scary time as our kids leave their childhood and move on to adulthood..

If you are the student, then you know that the Prom Night represents the finishing of High School, and the start of a new life, whether its off to college, university, or traveling. Things will change, your friends will all be following their own paths, and this is the one night where you will all be dressed up and out together.

For some it is not that important, they are just glad they graduated and move on.. but for most young girls, its all about the dress, the diets, the makeup, the shoes, and all the stress that goes with it for the parents and the kids, for this one crazy night.

The one night where you are more dressed up than you have ever been, where you look grown up in your gowns and suits, and the cameras are flashing from your parents, grandparents and siblings as they are a witness to this next stage of your life..

Many girls worry about their dress, what type should I get?.. what size? … and what does not help, is that most retail stores tend to display the size 2 - 6 models for these dresses, when in actual fact more than 6 out of 10 girls are plus size, or size 14 and up. This causes panic and crash diets among young girls, as the pressure to look perfect on that night increases.

Instead of trying to squeeze into a dress that is too small, find a dress that fits your body in all the right places, and you will look like a million bucks, no matter what size you are. The worse thing you can do, is to jam your curvy body, into something that was not meant for your body type.

So, ignore the size tag, find the dress you like and find the right one to fit you, and when it fits just right, you will feel great. Malls are not the only place to look for a nice dress, or gown, also consider shopping online, there are so many great styles this year for that perfect prom dress, and there are sites that cater ONLY to Prom Dresses…so you are sure to find one that will fit you. Shopping online means you have access to many more styles, than what your local mall will have, and by purchasing online, you don’t run the risk of buying the same dress as someone else.

Start early, measure yourself and figure out your size, and don’t obsess over the size, just go by the fit, and you will look and feel great for your prom, no tugging, no sucking in your belly, and not being able to breathe, you want to be comfortable, and have a good time, as this is the next step to the rest of your life, enjoy it and breathe easy!
