Tesla to make gas-electric car

Tesla to make gas-electric car

Tesla Motors, the people who put the all-electric car on the map, are going to work with gas too.The San Carlos, Calif.-based company will produce two basic types of its Whitestar sedan, due toward the end of 2009. One will run completely on batteries. The other will be a range-extended vehicle, or REV, CEO Ze’ev Drori said in an interview. In an REV, a small gas motor recharges the battery pack while the car is being driven. The battery pack on these types of cars only goes about 40 to 50 miles on a charge, but because it gets recharged while driving, the range of these cars will be longer.

“It is more than research. We intend to have it as part of the offering,” Drori said. “The Whitestar can be all-electric or it can be an REV.”

The idea behind coming out with an REV is to reach prospective buyers who are worried about range, said Elon Musk, Tesla’s chairman. (Drori and Musk were holding a press conference at corporate headquarters to mark the delivery of the first commercial version of the Tesla Roadster. Musk owns it.). The all-electric version of Whitestar is expected to go for 150 to 200 miles on a charge.

If the competition is an indication, the REV version of Whitestar will go much further. GM was the first major car company to tout REVs with its Chevy Volt, due around 2010. The Volt is expected to go around 400 miles … Read more

Solar installer Real Goods Solar makes go at IPO

Real Goods Solar, which installs solar panels on homeowners’ rooftops, filed paperwork on Thursday to go public with the goal of raising up to $57.5 million.

The company, now a subsidiary of environmental lifestyle company Gaiam, said it is the largest installer of grid-connected solar panels in California. It also operates in Colorado, where it is based.

The company was founded by John Schaeffer, who learned about solar electricity while living off-grid in a California commune in the 1970s.

It had revenues of almost $19 million last year. Including revenue from two installers it acquired, it had estimated 2007 revenue of $32.7 million and profits of $490,000.

The money it raises will be used for further expansion, which could include more acquisitions, it said in its S-1 form. One of its corporate goals is to consolidate the existing market for solar installers.

The solar market has been growing rapidly over the past few years, driven by supportive government incentives and growing interest among consumers in cleaner forms of electricity. Public solar panel makers have seen their stock prices go down significantly since the beginning of the year on fears of a shortage of silicon.

About half of the cost of purchasing solar panels is tied up in installation.

Real Goods Solar plans to list on the NASDAQ using the stock ticker symbol RSOL.

Airlines are Set to Offer Broadband Internet In-flight. TripMama.com has the Scoop…

The power and reach of broadband internet is coming to the air, and it’s coming fast. Airliners across the globe are racing to provide this high-demand service to their passengers. No longer will we be restricted to watching looped movies on tiny screens, to the isolation we’ve grown accustomed to as we bank high into the clouds. In our online, hyper-connected world the precious time we waste sleeping in the sky is set to become a thing of the past. We want web access at anytime and anywhere; we need our indispensable information flow from email accounts, breaking news sites, social networking, and the encyclopaedic wealth of facts and details that abound on the net. Some prominent global airlines are stepping up to this challenge, promising unparalleled access from take off to touch down. Here’s TripMama.com’s rundown of what’s coming our way.

American Airlines, with the help of recent partner AirCell, are set to greet 2008 with a roll out of its first fleet of broadband-equipped Boeing 767s. The service is promising to enable passengers to connect with 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi enabled devices, including laptops, Blackberrys, iPhones, and gaming handhelds. Designed with the power business user in mind, online meetings and VPN sessions will be supported to help optimise their travel time. The service will initially be tested on intercontinental flights, but expect full U.S. coverage shortly after. American Airlines are currently planning to charge for access, with pricing information being release closer to launch.

On the other side of the globe, Australian-based airline Qantas is retrofitting their Boeing 747s with a premium economy class. The tickets are expected to cost about half of a business-class ticket, and come complete with laptop power sockets and, you guessed it, WiFi. The new flight options start in early 2008 but if you can wait, the new Airbus A380s with USB and RJ45 ports as well as laptop power for all seats starts service around August 2008. For the luxurious first-class passengers, there is also a 17″ widescreen LCD. Qantas has also announced a trial of offering data access to Blackberries and other GSM devices, so those without a laptop can still stay connected.

German powerhouse Lufthansa previously stepped into the broadband arena with Connexion, supplied by Boeing, but after its unsuccessful run the offer was scrapped. Lufthansa are now teaming up with T-Mobile to offer broadband Internet access and wireless e-mail to its long-haul passengers. The wireless equipped flights are proposed to begin in early 2008. Given Lufthansa’s experience in this area, offering wireless previously on three quarters of its fleet, this is definitely one to keep watch for.

With offerings also on the horizon from Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and Frontier Airlines, in-sky WiFi seems like an inevitable wave, one that we all can enjoy surfing. To find out more about these airlines, the news, or savings on flights, come to TripMama.com

ChaCha.com

What is ChaCha.com? Well quite simply it is a new search engine. I know what you are thinking. What could a search engine possibly offer me? Well this particular search engine is not like others such as Google and Ask. Although both are very popular and work rather well for a search. Neither of them have the one thing that ChaCha has. A live guide to assist you in your search. Yep that’s right someone that helps you search on the Internet. Whether you are searching for a new recipe for Sunday Brunch or you are looking for a part for your ‘69 Charger a ChaCha guide can help you find it.

You would like to know how much a ChaCha guide get paid right? Well it depends on the level you are at. There are four levels at ChaCha.

Apprentice: This is your training level. You do not get paid at this level. You are trained by other guides before you are released to help the public on your own.

Pro: This level you start to assist live people in their search. You are paid $5 per search hour. Not your time logged into the system but time you are actively searching. So if you are actively searching 45 minutes out of an hour you get paid for those 45 minutes.

Master: At this level you are able to train others, you get paid for doing this. The pay is the same as it is on the Pro level.

Elite: At this level you are able to double your money and earn $10 per search hour.

There is one other way to earn with Chacha. You can be a ChaCha Agent. What this means is you get your own referral link to give to whomever you wish. When that person uses your referral link to download your tool bar then uses that tool bar to become a consistent user you are paid a dollar. A consistent user is any one that downloads the tool bar and performs 20+ searches in a one month time span. You get paid one dollar for that month then fifty cents for five months after.

I know that this does not sound like much but let me tell you it does add up. I have worked off and on for ChaCha since February. My husband has worked with them since October. He made enough money with ChaCha that it paid for our entire Christmas. We have a huge family.

How does this work? It is quite simple really. You login to their application. You wait for a box to pop up notifying you of a search. When the box pops up you also hear a door bell. You can choose to accept the search or decline the search. If you accept it. The application takes you into the search. If the search query is clear I let them know to hold just a moment while I pull up some resources. If the query is not clear then, I ask them to be a little more specific. I use our resources and provide the results. Once I have found 3-5 resources for the person I ask if the results are satisfactory. If they are I then thank them for searching ChaCha and wish them a good day. If the results are not satisfactory then I ask them to be a little clearer on what they are looking for. If I just can not find what it is they are looking for I apologize and let them know I am going to transfer them in hopes another guide will be able to assist them better.

So if you love searching on the Internet and are looking for a way to earn a little money working part time ChaCha is your way to go.

An Ultimate Lifestyle Secret - Search Engine Direction in 2007

It is the beginning of 2007 and if you have a website you are probably wondering what the year will bring in terms of Search Engine Optimization (SEO ) changes. Well, the changes can be summed up in one word, “relevancy.”

If you are going to talk about search engines and search engine trends, then you are really talking about what Google is doing. Because Google is the leader in this field, it is extremely rare that another search engine will innovate before Google.

Very early in 2007, Google filed some new patents. Google’s new patents talk about using relevancy to determine whether a site is worthy of being included in the search engine results. Relevancy, as far as Google is concerned, is about how the words on your page compare to every other site’s pages that include information on the same topic.

As an example, let’s say that your site is about politics. And, let’s say that it is about Republicans. Pages on your site will be compared to other sites that have pages about Republican politics and politicians. Suppose you have several pages that mention President Bush. If you do, then those pages should also mention the White House, the Vice President, Congress and current events that they are involved in. Why would that be necessary? Because there will be other sites that are relating George Bush to these other key phrases. For your pages to be considered, you’d better work them into your content also.

Using the “Relevancy Rule” to your advantage will help your site to be viewed as a possible authority site. If you can accomplish this, you will have a distinct advantage because Authority sites rate higher placement in the search engine results. Unfortunately, educational and government sites are viewed as authority sites just because of their domains. It is difficult to beat these pages, but you can do it if you provide better content.

So, for 2007, your goal is to have the search engines consider your site an authority by providing content that is not only original but also viewed as relevant when compared against the web as a whole. Keyword stuffing of a web page will no longer get you a high placement. The search engines are slowly being developed into artificially intelligent “machines” that can learn to recognize patterns and use those patterns to manipulate their output.

Google was the first to file their patents, but you better believe that Yahoo! and MSN are not far behind. Only time will tell if all of Google’s patents will be accepted due to the wide-ranging impact of the relevancy concept. But, at least for 2007, you had better make sure that your site has the best possible relevant information on your topic or your site ranking could sink into oblivion.

Radio Dramas: The Next Big Thing For MP3s

When they’re not listening to music, many people enjoy listening to podcasts on their MP3 players or iPods. Podcasts are great, but have you ever tried listening to old time radio dramas?

Before televisions were in every home, families would sit around listening to shows on the radio. There were thousands produced from 1920-1960, which is considered the Golden Age of Radio. Many of these shows were recorded and are now available in MP3 format.

I started listening to old time radio dramas last year, and they have been a blast. I find that they are the perfect length for my bus ride to work (usually under 30 minutes an episode) and engage my imagination much more than watching something with a visual – some of the sound effects are quite amazing. Here is a list of my favorite radio dramas, followed by links to where you can find OTR shows online:

1. “Box 13″ – This detective drama stars Alan Ladd as writer Dan Holiday. He runs a column in the newspaper that reads, “Adventure wanted – will go anywhere, do anything – Box 13″. Each episode features him investigating a letter he receives in Box 13.

2. “Gunsmoke” – A classic western show considered by many to be the greatestradio drama of all time. It takes place in Dodge City in the 1880’s and features characters you probably already know, Chester, Doc, Kitty and Matt Dillon, US Marshal. I honestly think this program is better than half of the shows on regular television today.

3. “Barry Craig, Confidential Investigator” – Another great “Whodunit?” type detective show featuring William Gargan as Barrie Craig, a Madison Avenue private detective with great one liners that remind me of a Raymond Chandler novel. Many episodes have great surprise endings!

4. “Six Shooter” –  Starring Jimmy Stewart, this western ran only from 1953 - 1954. It’s still one of my favorites, and Stewart’s acting is top notch.

5. “X Minus One” – Great science fiction series that featured stories by such authors of Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury.

Of course, there are many more shows work checking out – Variety shows, Comedies, Soap Operas, and even Quiz Shows. Why not add them to your playlist? The following links all have free shows you can download to get started:
